Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest Uganda’s National park with 33.7 Km2 however, it is also one of the most dramatic and lies on three Volcanoes; Mgahinga, Sabinyo and Muhavura. Gorilla tracking is the parks’ main activity with 380 individuals roams the slopes of the Volcanoes while the remaining 340 live nearby in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Activities;
-Volcano climbing.
The park offers three extinct volcanoes for physically fit hikers although there is no need of special mountaineering gear. The three Volcanoes are Muhavura, Sabinyo and Gahinga.
Mount Gahinga (3474m)
Gahinga is a local word which means small piles of stones. Mount Gahinga takes you about 6 hours round trip and goes through a good example of pure bamboo forest. It had once a crater lake on top but over time it has changed into a lush swamp.
Mount Muhavura (4127m)
This Volcano is typically cone-shaped and provides some of the best views in the country and once on the top hikers are rewarded with the view of the other Virunga Volcanoes, Lake Edward in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and the peaks of the mountains of the moon-Rwenzori. The 12km stretch takes approximately 8 hours round trip and it’s advisable to camp at Muhavura base camp in order to make an early start.
Mount Sabinyo (3669m)
Climbing Mountain Sabinyo has 3 challenging peaks to climb. A climb up the mountain takes one up a ridge along the eastern side of the climb to peak 1. If you are to continue, the climb to the peak 2 involves walking a ridge with breath-taking drops into gorges of Rwanda and Uganda, a dual experience you will achieve here.
Finally, the hike up to the peak 3 is steep with several ladders and mush scrambling. You are guaranteed to get your hands dirty en-route to peak3! Once on top, you will be in Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, what a triple experience this is!!!
The journey takes about eight hours round trip to cover the 14km stretch.
-Gorilla tracking; the park has 1(one) gorilla group Known as Nyakagezi and consists of 11 members; 2 silverbacks, 3 adult females, 4Juveniles and 2 infants though the group is mobile and sometimes crosses to Rwanda and DR Congo.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is blessed with a unique bird fauna; 79 bird species have thus far been recorded within the park, including several species endemic to the East Congo Montane region.
Where to Stay?
Up market accommodation is available at Volcanoes Camp, while camping and basic cottages are provided in the community Campground. A wide range of hotels and lodges are available at the near by Kisoro town.
Climate.
The Park experiences two rainy seasons; March-May and September-November. October is the wettest month with 250mm of rain and July the driest with just 10mm.
Best time to Visit.
In the months of January, February, June and July.
